Global Partnerships Reducing CVD

Global Heartcare Foundation is working side by side with health care providers and partners from Ethiopia, Tanzania, and India to save the lives of children and young adults with cardiovascular disease.

Meet Our Partners

We are proud to partner with the dedicated medical professionals who are working hard to serve their communities every day. Contact us to learn more about what a partnership with the Global Heartcare Foundation looks like.

Tanzania

Based on our successful 14 year partnership in cardiac care training and research in Ethiopia, GHF expanded its work to Tanzania in 2020. We are supporting our partner Kilimanjaro Medical Center (KCMC) in Moshi, Tanzania, which serves a population of 15 million inhabitants of northern Tanzania to build and support a cardiac care program.

KCMC is a 600-bed hospital, and also has a medical and nursing school. It serves an area of 15 million people in the Northern Zone of Tanzania. There is limited cardiac care in Tanzania (population 61 million), and what is available is mostly in Dar es Salaam. Most children and young adults with heart disease in KCMC’s area go undiagnosed and are not treated. Many children suffer from rheumatic heart disease, which could be prevented.

  • KCMC is currently building a cardiac center, with operating rooms, an intensive care unit, and a cardiac catheterization laboratory. Once completed, KCMC will offer cardiac surgery, and can focus on training a cardiac surgery team. We are supporting KCMC in developing a cardiac care program, and will focus initially on training cardiologists to diagnose and manage patients who come to KCMC with heart disease.

  • Pregnancy uniquely impacts women's health, increasing the risk of conditions like gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia/eclampsia, and peripartum cardiomyopathy, which can be life-threatening. Read about how we are working with our partners at KCMC to prevent CVD among women.

Ethiopia

Since 2010, we've collaborated with various partners in Ethiopia, including the Cardiac Center of Ethiopia, Children’s Heart Fund of Ethiopia, and the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health. Recognizing the need for sustainable capacity building, we trained a local cardiac team in Bangalore, India, who have since performed their first successful cardiac surgery in Addis Ababa in June 2017.

Additionally, we support initiatives to prevent rheumatic heart disease through partnerships with physicians, universities, and the Federal Ministry of Health. One key effort was the Rheumatic Heart Disease Prevention Program, which includes a research study led by Dr. Dejuma Yadeta from Addis Ababa University. This study sheds light on the burden of heart disease in Ethiopia, particularly among children and young adults with rheumatic heart disease, contributing to increased awareness at the Federal Ministry of Health. Furthermore, we collaborated with the World Heart Federation and the Pan-African Society of Cardiology (PASCAR) to collect and report data for the Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD) Scorecard in Ethiopia, providing valuable insights for CVD prevention and management in the country.

India

Dr. Kshettry and two partners from Narayana.

Our training partner is Narayana Health Institute of Cardiac Sciences (NHICS), in Bangalore. Global Heartcare Foundation and Narayana Health have signed a memorandum of understanding to expand their collaboration for training cardiac teams from Africa.

Dr. Kshettry has visited Narayana hospital many times over the past 20+ years, working closely with NHICS’s founder Dr. Devi Shetty, to train cardiac surgery teams in India.

NHICS generously agreed to train the Ethiopian and Tanzanian cardiac teams. NHICS has been rated among the best cardiac and training hospitals in the world.

Partnerships make it all possible. If you would like to learn more about our work, please contact us today.
